Bandhani or Bandhej is a traditional form of tie & dye, a 500-year-old practice and is still used even today by the artisans. Earlier, the dye colours used in the tie-dye process were extracted from various natural elements like plants, leaves, vegetables, turmeric and flowers. As per the historical note, the Bandhani saree was first worn by the bride in Bana Bhatt’s Harshacharita royal wedding. Bandhani is considered auspicious by the western Indians, especially in Gujarat and Rajasthan, believing it brings good luck, so wore them for all the auspicious celebrations.
